spins & needles @ winterlude 2010 + the urban cozy project

 

PRESS RELEASE - SPINS & NEEDLES @ WINTERLUDE 2010

This February, the snowy landscape of Canada’s capital region will be transformed when Canadian creative collective Spins & Needles remixes the winter cultural experience with cutting-edge programming at the 32nd edition of Winterlude in Ottawa-Gatineau. The collective presents a series of free outdoor interactive events combining DJs and workshops at several festival sites, alongside a large-scale, winter-themed urban art/craft installation which connects festival visitors and artists and crafters around the world.

What's going on:

• Friday February 5th @ Majors Hill Park (7:00-10:00 p.m.): Catch Spins & Needles at the opening night of Winterlude near Parliament Hill. Work on winter-related projects while DJs spin funky beats. Watch for our interactive outdoor tent.
• Friday February 12th @ Confederation Park ( 8:00-10:30 p.m.): Catch Spins & Needles for a late night Friday event in the Crystal Lounge while taking a stroll past the Urban Cozy Project. Make some stuff while DJs spin funky beats.
• Weekend Warm-Up Craft Lab: Saturdays + Sundays during the festival (12-4 pm) @ Maison Charron, Parc Jacques-Cartier: Work on various winter-related DIY projects, including your own urban cozy to be part of the public art/craft installation, with the help of instructors while listening to some funky beats.
• The Winterlude 2010 Urban Cozy Project: Spins & Needles will present a large-scale public art installation that integrates current movements in urban art, craft and design with social media technologies. “Urban cozies” have been submitted by artists, crafters and designers from across Canada, the United Kingdom, Europe. Australia, Africa and the U.S. and will be wrapped around trees, lampposts, benches and other urban elements on festival grounds. Spins & Needles is helping you get ready for the holidays. What better way to pick up some new pieces and glam it up for holiday season?

Once again we're bringing you an evening of trade and exchange - a jewellery swap + modification party on Thursday December 10.

This chill night will feature:
>A big jewellery swap - pick and choose your pieces
>DIY jewellery alteration and decoration stations - revamp those pieces you've found
>Tutorials on how to make bib necklaces, stud bracelets + other bling
>Funky beats by DJs Jason Pelletier + guests

When: Thursday December 10 @ 8:00 p.m.-12:00 a.m.

Cover : $10 with at least 7 pieces of jewellery, 19+

To participate as a swapper:
No need to buy tickets/register in advance. Just show up at the door with at least 7 pieces of of gently used, clean jewellery. This can include but is not limited to necklaces, earrings (one set=one piece), rings, brooches, bracelets... No clothing please!

(For those who show up with no jewellery to swap, you'll need to pay an additional $5 + cover).

Tips For Swapping:
> Items should be in good condition. No discolouration, no dents, and clean.
> Play nice. Take only what you need.

Join Spins & Needles for a Halloween party inspired by the recently released movie and classic book, Where the Wild Things Are!

Dress up in your finest Halloween duds, listen to some funky beats by DJs Jason Pelletier + guests, have a few drinks, and work on DIY Wild Things projects! We're in a new venue this month - the Urban Well in Sandy Hill.

ottawa premiere of handmade nation: tuesday november 3

Spins & Needles, in partnership with the Ontario Crafts Council, are proud to present the Ottawa premiere and first screening of Handmade Nation, a documentary about the rise of DIY, art, craft and design. Directed by Faythe Levine.

Catch this Tuesday night special movie screening at Mercury Lounge in the Byward Market. Seating is limited. Dance party to follow at 10:00 p.m.

Join guests hosts spins & needles for a late night out at the National Gallery of Canada!

In conjunction with the Gallery's evening program Artsparks, spins & needles presents a night of creative exploration of the contemporary collection. Fine art meets funky beats and hands-on art/craft workshops in the Gallery space.

The night will feature late-night access to the Gallery's contemporary collection, interactive DIY art/craft projects, music by DJs Jason Pelletier and Clifford Brown and guided tours. Interpret the Gallery - its collection and its space - in a new light!

When: Thursday September 17th @ 7 p.m. - 11 p.m.
